Can you outline your current responsibilities?
As part of the executive team at Aldevron, a prominent supplier of biologics for gene therapies, cell therapies, and vaccine advancements, my primary focus is on crafting the company’s strategic direction, alongside overseeing product management and marketing initiatives.
When did your passion for science begin?
I have a distinctive background in that my fascination with science emerged during childhood. With both my grandmothers and my mother being physicians in India, I was continually surrounded by the medical field. Living adjacent to their hospital allowed me to grow up immersed in healthcare, sparking my ongoing curiosity toward science and mathematics. Upon my arrival in the U.S. for my studies, my goal was to venture into biotechnology, aiming to significantly impact patients’ lives, following in my family’s legacy.
Could you tell us about your path to your present position?
My professional journey is deeply rooted in my interests in biotechnology and mathematics. In college, I majored in mathematics and minored in biotechnology, microbiology, and chemistry. This academic background paved the way for my future career.
My initial role as a healthcare consultant was essential in honing my problem-solving skills and fostering rapid learning through encounters with diverse clients and challenges. I later pursued an MBA to expand my influence in healthcare. My career included stints at Bain & Co. and Genentech, where I focused on the commercial aspects of medicine development. Subsequently, I joined Medtronic in Minneapolis, where I steadily assumed greater responsibilities, ultimately becoming the general manager for their interventional pain division. Seeking to reconnect with my biotech roots, I transitioned to Aldevron, driven by its mission and innovation culture to support the development of potential cures.
What challenges have you faced throughout your career, and what have you learned?
Throughout my career, I often found myself as one of the few women or minorities in any given setting, whether in advanced math classes or executive meetings. Early in my career, I was often unaware of the implications of my different identity, as my upbringing instilled in me the values of hard work and resilience. However, as I progressed into leadership roles, I encountered preconceived notions of leadership and numerous microaggressions, like exclusion from meetings or having my ideas repeated by others before being acknowledged. I cultivated a network of mentors and allies who helped me navigate these challenges, reinforcing the importance of self-confidence and the necessity to make space for others who may also feel marginalized.
What drives your enthusiasm in your current position?
Identifying my purpose early on has been invaluable. The impactful work of my family members spurred me into a career focused on creating positive change, albeit in a less direct manner. My enthusiasm is revived by the transformative medicines we create at Aldevron, which significantly improve patients’ lives, propelling me in my professional journey.
What is your leadership style like?
Collaboration best describes my leadership style. I prioritize understanding my team and strive to lead with sincerity, empathy, and humility.
What advice would you offer to young women interested in science or a similar career path?
I encourage you to identify what sparks your curiosity and allow that to steer your path. Consider the problems you enjoy solving or the questions you yearn to explore. This exploration will guide you, while your skills and confidence will develop along the way. Additionally, nurturing a supportive network of individuals who acknowledge your capabilities and offer honest feedback is vital for personal and professional growth.
