Exploring Helen Harrington’s Odyssey: Dedication, Enthusiasm, and Innovative Solutions

Currently at the helm of the Biopharma product management division at Phenomenex, she leverages a problem-solving approach shaped by her passion for forensic science and analytical chemistry. Her journey exemplifies the significance of patience, flexibility, and defying conventional career paths to find success in a dynamic global industry.

Can you share an overview of your responsibilities?

As the Senior Product Manager, I lead the Biopharma product management team. Our focus is on developing new products that tackle customer challenges and address their pressing needs through innovative solutions. Our role encompasses a wide range of activities related to product development, from the initial idea stage to ongoing commercial support for our users.

At what point did your interest in science begin?

My fascination with clinical and forensic science has been a constant throughout my life. From a young age, I envisioned a future working in a hospital lab setting. I was always drawn to environments that required problem-solving, whether it was through mathematics, science, or investigative work.

Could you walk us through your personal journey to your current role?

Upon completing my education, I attended Manchester University in the UK to study chemistry. Initially enrolled in medicinal chemistry, I soon discovered that my true interest lay in analytical chemistry, prompting me to switch my focus. I earned a first-class honours degree in Chemistry, subsequently pursuing a PhD in Synthetic Organic Chemistry at the same institution, followed by postdoctoral research at the University of Illinois focusing on Ebola treatment.

With a desire for a fast-paced career, I joined Phenomenex in 2007 after my time in Chicago concluded. The technical sales position appealed to me as it allowed me to apply my analytical background in a results-oriented setting. Over 17 years, I have undertaken various roles at Phenomenex, from leading bulk and prep sales in the UK and Ireland to becoming a technical specialist in biopharma and now leading a dedicated team focused on innovative product development in this sector.

What obstacles have you encountered, particularly as a woman, and what key lesson have you learned?

A significant challenge in my career involved balancing ambition and parenthood. Traditionally, roles in product management and innovation at Phenomenex required being near our North American headquarters, making advancement difficult without a relocation. After my first daughter was born in 2010, the flexibility to work reduced hours was essential. Phenomenex’s willingness to accommodate my needs was crucial and made staying with the company worthwhile, despite limited advancement opportunities.

Although my career prospects were initially restricted to international positions, the onset of COVID-19 changed that dynamic, allowing remote work and lessening geographical barriers. During nearly 11 years, I worked on expanding my skills in product development while also welcoming two more daughters. This journey emphasized the importance of patience and recognizing that everyone’s career path is unique. It occasionally proved challenging to watch others advance, yet staying true to my aspirations has led me to my current fulfilling role.

What fuels your enthusiasm in your current position?

I find immense satisfaction in transforming our product ideas into valuable solutions for customers, addressing their toughest challenges. The culture at Phenomenex is invigorating and, even in tough times, the camaraderie and support from my colleagues make work enjoyable.

What governs your work style and ethos?

I adhere to three essential weekly commitments: 1) walking my children to school each morning, 2) participating in karate classes with my daughters twice a week, and 3) reading to my younger children at night.

Aside from those priorities, my schedule remains adaptable. I take great joy in my position and relish many aspects of my role, although this sometimes complicates achieving work-life balance. Navigating different time zones poses scheduling challenges, yet I believe that the effort invested in one’s role yields significant returns. During quieter periods, I often adjust my start time and focus on personal projects, while during high-demand times, I maximize efficiency, prioritizing meaningful tasks. I also protect my vacation time by ensuring no work communication intrudes on my breaks.

What advice do you have for young women interested in science or seeking a career like yours?

If you aspire to a career in science, various organizations in the UK offer STEM days for young people, providing valuable insights and support for career aspirations in these fields. I highly recommend seeking early industry opportunities as they shape your career trajectory. Understanding your motivations and passions is crucial; do not hesitate to explore non-traditional paths. If something feels off, trust that instinct and wait for the right opportunity to present itself.
